Who is it for?
Who Is couples therapy for?
- Couples who are struggling with communication or feeling emotionally disconnected.
- Couples who are at a significant crossroads in their relationship (e.g. deciding whether to move in together, get married, have a child, or separate).
- People who want to gain a deeper understanding of their relationship and explore how they can move forward together.
- Couples who want to proactively work on their relationship and support its growth, even when there is no immediate crisis.
How does it work?
Couples Therapy is a collaborative process in which both partners work together with a therapist to strengthen and improve their relationship. Through the sessions, partners are encouraged to explore how they relate to one another, how they communicate, and how their patterns of behavior shape the dynamics of their relationship.
With the therapist’s support, couples can identify unhelpful patterns, work through conflicts, and develop healthier and more constructive ways of relating to one another.
In some cases, sessions may involve two therapists, bringing different and complementary perspectives to the therapeutic process in order to better support the needs of the couple.
How can couples therapy help?
What Couples Therapy Can Offer
- Improve communication
- Strengthen emotional connection
- Understand the underlying causes of conflict
- Explore new ways of living and growing together
- Strengthen cooperation and mutual understanding
- Receive support during challenging life transitions, such as parenthood, moving, loss, and major life changes
When a relationship cannot or is not meant to continue, therapy can help couples navigate separation in a healthy and respectful way.
The Role of the Therapist
The therapist provides a neutral and supportive space, helping the couple explore their challenges without taking sides. The therapist creates a safe and supportive space where both partners can express themselves, feel heard, and develop a deeper understanding of one another.
In some cases, having two therapists can bring greater balance and depth to the therapeutic process.
Duration and Frequency
The duration of therapy depends on the issues being addressed and the goals of the couple. Sessions are typically held weekly or every other week and last 60 to 75 minutes.
Therapy may be short-term or longer-term, depending on the complexity of the issues the couple wishes to explore.
A Journey of Self-Discovery and Connection
Couples therapy is not only about repairing the relationship. It also offers each partner an opportunity to better understand themselves through the way they relate to the other. The relationship can become a mirror, bringing deeper patterns, needs, and ways of relating into awareness..
Therapy can lead either to a renewed and more conscious relationship, or to a healthy separation guided by mutual respect and responsibility.
