Over time, other approaches emerged, including humanistic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and many others. The goal remained the same: to help people better understand themselves and develop new ways of coping with life’s challenges.

The Birth of Family and Group Therapy

After World War II, therapists began to recognize that many difficulties were not just individual issues, but were also shaped by the systems people lived in—their families, workplaces, and wider communities. This led to the development of family therapy, which views the family as a dynamic system of relationships, where both problems and solutions are shaped and shared by its members.

During the same period, group psychotherapy also emerged, giving participants the opportunity to receive support and feedback from others going through similar experiences. The power of the group lies in the feeling that “I’m not alone” and in the opportunity to try out new ways of communicating in a safe and supportive environment.

From the Village to the Modern Therapy Room

Although the form and language have changed, the essence remains the same: people need a space and someone they can turn to, where they can share their thoughts, fears, and hopes. From the village elder to the modern psychotherapist, the human need for connection, understanding, and support remains timeless.

Today, family and group psychotherapy are powerful tools for building resilience and restoring balance in relationships. It is a reminder that therapy is not only an individual journey—it can also be a shared journey.

The History of Psychotherapy and the Evolution of Family & Group Therapy Since the dawn of humanity, people have sought

[55

post-2975","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-mental-health-therapy
["GET
